A Letter to the Class of 2015

Boston University can be an intimidating place to go to school. With nearly 500 student groups, no neatly defined campus, and the city of Boston all around, students can easily get lost. Most underclassmen barely even know what they want to study, let alone what groups they want to join or activities they want to pursue. Just like with academics, the choices for extra-curriculars can be overwhelming. Greek life is one vehicle to break down the vast selection into a manageable, fun, and unforgettable experience.

When most people think of fraternities, they immediately picture parties, drinking, and general depravity. What they don’t necessarily see is the important role we play in breaking down the college experience. Sigma Alpha Mu provides each member an outlet to try different activities and experiences, all while being surrounded by a close group of friends who share similar values. We take pride in giving our members opportunities to try different things and meet new people. Into philanthropy and community service? We’ve got dozens of opportunities, large and small, to which we’ve donated tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours over the last few years. Intramural sports? We participate in soccer, broomball, volleyball, and softball just to name a few. Trying to discover all that Boston has to offer? We have brotherhood trips to local restaurants and make frequent trips into the heart of the city. How about leadership roles? Not only do we provide internal positions to gain experience, but we also have brothers situated throughout the campus who can connect you to positions you may never have thought of. What about finding other student groups to join? All of our brothers are also active members in other, non Greek organizations, from a capella to ultimate frisbee. Our brotherhood is made up of a truly diverse group of people, coming from all different religions, backgrounds, and experiences. Most of our brothers never thought they would join a Greek organization. We encourage individuality and enjoy a truly eclectic atmosphere.

Some cynics say joining a fraternity is just paying for friends. What they’re forgetting is that the process is not one sided. We have to choose you to be a potential new member. We don’t accept just any student looking for a simple good time. We carefully select interested students based on character, values, and personality and invite them to join in our brotherhood. Dues are not a barrier to entry; we have never turned someone away because they were unable to pay. We believe that membership in our organization is an honor and a privilege, not to be taken lightly or dismissed simply for financial reasons. Sammy is a tight knit organization full of ambitious students who are all focused on making these short four years of your life truly epic. We pride ourselves on making Boston University your home away from home. Come see what has made us BU’s Fraternity of the Year for two years in a row.

We look forward to meeting you!
