ABOUT EVENTS INVOLVEMENT

Boston University’s Beta Upsilon chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu takes great pride in our community service and philanthropic efforts. In 2005, Sigma Alpha Mu chose the Alzheimer’s Association as its national service project and partner to raise money for Alzheimer’s research. The Judy Fund, in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association, was established in 2003 by Sigma Alpha Mu alumnus Marshall Gefland in memory of his wife Judy Gefland. The goal of the Judy Fund is to help prevent Alzheimer’s from affecting future generations and has raised more than $4.3 million nationally for research and advocacy efforts.
Our chapter shares a similar vision of philanthropy and in addition to our own efforts in support of the Judy Fund, we participate in and hold numerous events of our own. We kick-start each school year with our annual dodgeball tournament, and collectively have raised more than $2,000 for the Judy Fund. We’ve fused our dedication to philanthropy with our affinity for music by hosting three large-scale music events on campus since Fall 2009. Artists featured in these concerts include Curren$y, Sam Adams, Milkman, Super Mash Bros., The White Panda and E-603. Combined, these legendary events raised more than $12,000 for the Judy Fund.
Furthermore, our efforts extend beyond the Judy Fund to other on-campus and off-campus events and organizations. In the past, we have worked with fellow Greeks Pi Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Omega and Omega Phi Alpha and a myriad of fellow Terrier clubs. Some organizations we’ve volunteered with include the American Cancer Society (Relay For Life), the Jimmy Fund, Haley House and Rosie’s Place, raising thousands of dollars and service hours in the process.
Since Sigma Alpha Mu is a historically (but not exclusively) Jewish fraternity, we work closely with the Hillel House at Boston University. We’ve volunteered in Hillel-organized blood drives, mitzvah days and participate in their annual Hillel Ambassadors program.
While raising funds for philanthropic efforts, and the Judy Fund in particular, is a huge focus for us, we also pride ourselves in our support for other Boston University clubs and organizations and their own efforts. A goal we have seen come to fruition is our expanded presence on campus and in the local Boston community. However, we are eager to partake in new opportunities and projects, whatever they may be. Please feel free to contact Philanthropy Chairman Jeremy Meltzer if you’d like to work together in the future or if you have any questions.
